For a moment, Lawrence and Olivia finally seem to have something. After so many setbacks, it would be easy for Lawrence to convince himself that they deserve to keep it.
In Episode 30 of Rich Cat Poor Pug, Lawrence faces another difficult choice. He takes something from Olivia, but not because he wants it for himself. He knows that keeping what isn’t theirs would mean solving one problem by creating another.
Doing the right thing costs them. Lawrence makes the choice anyway.
When Doing the Right Thing Costs You
Choices are easy when there is nothing at stake. They become much harder when doing the right thing means giving up something you desperately need.
Lawrence and Olivia have almost no money and very little security. Something that might seem insignificant to someone else can make an enormous difference to them. That makes walking away from it even harder.
Lawrence could justify keeping it. He could think about everything Olivia has gone without or all the moments when nobody stopped to help them. Instead, he makes a decision based not on what they need, but on what he believes is right.
It doesn’t reward him immediately. There is no sudden change in their circumstances and no guarantee that his decision will lead to something better. Lawrence simply accepts the cost of his choice.
At the halfway point of their first season, Lawrence and Olivia still have a long road ahead. But the decisions Lawrence makes when he has almost nothing are beginning to define the father he will become.
Doing the right thing means more when you have something to lose.
